Thank you for entrusting us with your business and taking care of your home. With the heavy snow we have received this year, we are having an increase in claims with people hoping to get warranty repairs. However, not all claims being made are warranty issues. There is a certain level of care required for homeowners during high snow years. We use a high quality 24-gauge or 26-guage metal for our snow guards, this is a higher quality of metal than the 29-gauge metal sold by retailers like Home Depot and Lowes. Even though it is a high quality of metal, there are still limits to the weight it can hold.
One square foot of snow can weigh 4-13 pounds. A home that is 1,000 square feet, has about 1,060 square feet of roof. That means, if there is 1 foot of snow on a roof with 1,000 sq ft there could be up to 13,000 pounds of snow on the roof. What happens if you have too much snow on your roof? If left on the roof, snow can turn into ice, creating ice dams, a sagging roof, leaks, or even causing the roof to collapse.
With ice damming being a major issue causing damage, here are a few ways to prevent and remove an ice dam and/or snow before it causes damage to your home.
All Custom Exteriors has a great 2-year warranty on our products, our warranty however only covers snow fall up to 5 inches or less, on a roof. Anything more than that would be considered a natural disaster and any damage would go to the homeowner’s insurance company. It is ultimately the responsibility of the homeowner to get the excess weight of snow off the roof, to prevent damage.
